When Youth Therapy Gets Stuck: Trauma, Anxiety, and Emotional Dysregulation in Children
What You Will Discover In The Private Practice Owner Masterclass
Eight parts to the Masterclass, taking you from the decision to go out on your own to a practice full of the clients you want to serve and a team that can grow with it, with the legal & ethical side handled at every step.

Leaving the agency means leaving the steady paycheck, the benefits and the people who handled everything but the clinical work. Joyce Marter walks through how to make the leap: the services to offer within your scope and competence, how to stay compliant with the APA, NASW, ACA and NAADAC codes on business relationships with the people you serve, and how to set a vision and a 1-, 3- and 5-year business plan for the practice you actually want. You'll be able to make the leap with a clear plan instead of a leap of faith, so you run a professional practice and start helping clients from the first appointment.

Choose the wrong business structure, mishandle client records, or miss a licensing or reporting requirement, and a new practice can face a board complaint, a privacy breach or a costly legal problem. Joyce Marter covers business structure, HIPAA compliance, state licensure and mandatory reporting obligations, including how to set up the privacy protections your practice needs and when each decision calls for an attorney. You'll be able to open your doors with the legal foundation already in place, so your clients' privacy is handled right from the first appointment.

How do I consistently attract new clients? For private practice owners, it's the question that never goes away. Joyce Marter shows how to define your niche, mission, brand and elevator pitch, build a website and directory presence that works, and grow referral partnerships with healthcare providers, EAPs, schools, treatment programs and community organizations. She also covers content, social media, speaking and media, and where testimonials cross an ethical line. You'll be able to build a marketing & referral system designed to keep new clients coming, so the people who need exactly what you offer can find you.

Too many therapists undercharge for the value of their work, and pricing gets even harder when the practice is your own. Joyce Marter, who built her own group practice on an insurance-friendly, sliding-fee model, shows how to move past limiting beliefs about money and self-worth, set ethical fees that let you do your best work while staying affordable for the clients who need you, structure a sliding scale that makes both possible, and decide whether to join insurance panels, go private pay, or combine the two. You'll be able to build a fee structure that keeps your practice financially strong for the long term, so you can keep serving the clients you care about.

Agencies have whole teams handling intake, records and billing. In your own practice it's all on you, and while you're great at the clinical work, operations is a different job entirely. Joyce Marter shows how to set up intake, informed consent, documentation, billing, credentialing and your EHR as one system, from first contact to record retention. You'll be able to follow the same reliable process every time a new client starts, so client information stays private and secure, admin takes less of your time, and costly mistakes are far less likely.

Your caseload is full, you're turning people away, and you know it's time to grow. Joyce Marter, who grew a group practice to more than 100 therapists, shows how to know when it's time to grow, hire team members who are competent and an ethical and cultural fit for your practice, handle employee and contractor decisions, and supervise the therapists you bring on with confidence. You'll be able to finally serve more clients than one therapist ever could, without taking all of the work on yourself.

Private practice can be a "lonely business," with every decision resting on you and a caseload that keeps asking for more. Joyce Marter treats self-care, boundary-setting and burnout prevention as ethical obligations, and shows how to build systems so everything doesn't depend on you. You'll be able to do your best work for your clients and still have a life outside your practice, so your clients get a therapist who is present, not stretched thin.

It's easy to put off planning for what happens to your practice, and your clients, if you ever step away. Joyce Marter's position is that it is never too early to think about succession and exit strategy. She covers what makes a practice sustainable, ethical and valuable, then helps you turn everything from the Masterclass into a personal action plan for your practice's next stage. You'll be able to build a practice with lasting value and a clear plan for every stage, so the clients who depend on you are cared for no matter what comes next.

What You Will Discover In The Private Practice Owner Masterclass
Eight parts to the Masterclass, taking you from the decision to go out on your own to a practice full of the clients you want to serve and a team that can grow with it, with the legal & ethical side handled at every step.

See how to separate any panic attack into its four components: the thought, the physical arousal, the emotion, and what the client does in response. Then map those onto the antecedent, behavior, consequence cycle so you can see which response is keeping the attacks coming, and cover anxiety sensitivity and the role of the amygdala in language you can use with a client.

Know how to identify the presentation you’re witnessing. A panic attack is four or more sensations that peak fast, and it can appear in any anxiety presentation. Panic disorder is different: at least one attack that came out of nowhere, followed by fear of the next one and the avoidance that follows. Agoraphobia can show up with panic disorder or without it, and the two often travel together.

Watch Ashley Smith conduct an interoceptive assessment live, then learn to run the exposures in session: how to choose the exercise for the sensation the client fears most, how long to stay with it, what to say while the client is having the sensation, and how to set up the practice they do between sessions. You will get her decision rules for when a client repeats an exposure and when they move to a harder one, the self-report measures for tracking progress week to week, why safety signals have to come out before in vivo work, and how imaginal exposure brings the client's thoughts into it.

Discover which automatic thoughts and core beliefs drive panic, how to build self-talk a client can actually use during an attack, and where self-compassion fits. Then learn what mindfulness is and is not in panic treatment, and when breath retraining is useful versus when it is contraindicated.

Understand why a full medical workup belongs early in a panic case and what it rules in as well as out, what your role is on the parts of the plan you do not control, and how to talk with a client and with the other providers on their case. You will leave with language that stays inside your scope and keeps the rest of a client's care lined up with the exposure work instead of pulling against it.

Be able to move a stalled panic case forward using four specific methods. When the client stops doing the exposures between sessions, how to bring in their values and use rewards and consequences to get adherence back. When a client will not give up a safety signal, what to do about it. When the family accommodates every avoidance, what to say to them. And when a panic attack starts in your office, what to do for the rest of the session. You will also learn how to sequence interventions when panic shows up alongside another presentation, and how to close treatment on the right goal.

The Private Practice Masterclass Starts In:
Joyce Marter began in addictions treatment and at a national Employee Assistance Program, then opened her own private practice. She founded Urban Balance in 2004, built it on an insurance-friendly, sliding-fee model, and led it as CEO until selling it to Refresh Mental Health in 2017.
Owning a practice asks for more than clinical excellence. When you're responsible for everything, not just your clients, you're also setting fees, marketing, hiring, supervising, working with insurance companies and keeping the legal side in order. Joyce Marter has made every one of those decisions, from her own practice to a group of more than 100 therapists, and after the sale she served as Vice President of Marketing & PR for Refresh Mental Health. In the Masterclass, she walks through all of it, from ethical fees and referral partnerships to hiring, supervision and succession, and helps you build an action plan for your own practice.
